Myers Automotive Group in conjunction with Subaru Canada, announced the official ground-breaking of Myers Barrhaven Subaru located at 4147 Strandherd Drive in Barrhaven on May 3, 2023.

Myers Automotive Group joined the Barrhaven business community in 2016 with the opening of Myers Barrhaven Toyota. Now, Myers is proud to announce the ground-breaking of our fifth Barrhaven location, the Myers Barrhaven Subaru dealership, which will bring the Subaru brand of top-quality vehicles to the area.

Locally owned and operated by Harry and Robert Mews; the Mews family has always placed a strong emphasis on community involvement and giving back. Having grown up in the area and still today living in Barrhaven, Harry and Rob have made it a priority to have Myers become an integral part of the Barrhaven community. “Myers is Ottawa’s largest retailer of new and used vehicles and Subaru is one of Canada’s leading automotive brands. We know that this partnership bringing Myers and Subaru together here in Barrhaven, will be great for consumers and for the Barrhaven Community” said Myers CEO Cyril Leeder.

In addition to offering new employment opportunities for the residents of Barrhaven and surrounding areas, Myers and Subaru are committed to supporting our community in other ways as well. Both organizations have a long-standing tradition of giving back to local charities and organizations, and we will continue to prioritize community involvement and support here in Barrhaven.

“Subaru Canada is extremely proud to welcome Myers Automotive Group to the Subaru Canada family under the name “Barrhaven Subaru”. This is an important market for Subaru and we are very excited to work with Harry and Robert Mews who have deep family roots and an impeccable reputation within the Ottawa community and have grown a successful organization as Ottawa and Eastern Ontario’s largest automotive group” said Tomohiro Kubota, Chairman, President & CEO.

The store Grand opening is scheduled for the spring of 2024.

At Myers, we are proud to be a part of the Barrhaven community, and we are excited to continue to grow and serve our customers with the highest level of quality and care. Thank you for your continued support as we embark on this new and exciting chapter in our journey.

About Subaru Canada

The year 1978 represented a major milestone for Subaru; this was the year their vehicles were first sold through dealers in Canada. As was their style, they set about introducing drivers to a series of strikingly original and engaging models including the Subaru Brat (1978), the Justy (1984) and the XT (1985). In

1989, the responsibility for importing Subaru cars here was taken over by Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI), a subsidiary of Subaru Corporation (formerly Fuji Heavy Industries).

Of course, it should come as no surprise that Subaru vehicles have resonated so profoundly with Canadian drivers. Our ever-changing weather has the capacity to keep us guessing at all times. Our landscape is equally varied — from the rugged beauty of the coastal towns in the east and west, to the wide-open splendour of the Prairies, to the concrete corridors of our large urban centres. If an environment that called for all-road/all-weather capability could be drawn up on a map, that map would look exactly like our home and native land. So, yes, Subaru is a proud Japanese manufacturer of automobiles. But our connection with this country and its drivers runs as deep as a Rocky Mountain snowfall.

Henry “Hank” Mews

Feb 28,1937-Oct 2,2022

With sadness, we announce the passing of Hank Mews who left us peacefully with family at his side at the Ottawa General Hospital on Oct 2, 2022. Hank is predeceased by his parents HGR (Harry) and Vera (Sparling) Mews and left to mourn by his sister, Nancy, in St. John’s along with many cherished relatives and friends.  Hank was a loving husband to Phyllis (nee Randell) and a devoted father to Beth(Bill), Barb (Greg), Harry (Joanne), and Robert (Jody). Proud advocate and supporter of thirteen grandchildren Drew, Lauren, Sarah, Taylor, Kylie, Mark, Sasha, Bobby, Brett, Henry, Max, Charlie, and Oscar.  His large presence and generous spirit will be dearly missed by family, colleagues, and friends at large.

Hank was born and raised in St Johns Newfoundland.  A gifted athlete in his younger years found him falling into the lap of an adoring fan at one of his basketball games. Hank loved to share this story as what began the life he then shared with Phyllis for 61 years. Academics were not of interest to Hank as a youth so he left Newfoundland in pursuit of employment on the mainland where he received a pilot license in hopes of a career in the air and sharpened his skills in sales and business.  Hank returned to Newfoundland, married Phyllis, and eventually together they put down roots in Ottawa raising a family and building a successful career spanning 50 years with General Motors and the owner and dealer principal of Myers Automotive Group.

Hank believed in hard work and commitment.  His sharp aptitude for a no-nonsense approach to business was rewarded with receiving many awards over the years and the opportunity to sit on several General Motors Boards. He was a founding member and President of ONCDA (Ottawa New Car Dealers Association) and founding member and President of LAR Inc., a buying group out of Montreal.

Community-minded Hank’s belief in participation has left an impact within our city of Ottawa. Hank volunteered his time with the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation as a fundraiser and then Chairman as well as serving as Chair of the Hospital Board. He served on committees in his local church and Hank gave generously to causes close to his heart. Hank was instrumental in donating a lead gift to establish the Acute Care for the Elderly Unit at the QCH through Myers Automotive.  His impact and his belief in Philanthropy will continue in his absence as demonstrated by the latest gift to the Ottawa Heart Institute.

Hank’s ability to hold court around a dinner table will be missed by anyone who has spent time at the most cherished family cottage.  An avid reader with a love for history and conversation that required opinions brought Hank to life.  He would open his arms to welcome lively discussions and debates over wine and great food happily sharing his not-so-subtle opinions, words of wisdom, and guidance with friends and family alike.

Hank’s happiest times were spent at the cottage entertaining, pulling grandkids in the tractor, touring the lake by boat in search of land for sale, puttering in the vegetable garden, playing the odd tennis tournament, and enjoying the end of the day on the veranda as the sun sets and G&Ts are poured.

His love story with Phyllis was beautiful and they had the good fortune to travel extensively around the world through his successful career.  They shared a love for music, and culture (and Hank for politics) but a perfect day was not complete without fitting in a tennis match or round of golf wherever they could. As a lifelong learner, he enjoyed season tickets to the NAC, attending university courses, discussing books with friends, and a game of bridge when forced to by Phyllis.  As life slowed down walks were daily and Hank always could be found searching out for Phyllis’ hand to hold.

With Hank’s passing, we would like to acknowledge the caring approach and support given to Hank and his family by the Civic Hospital Geriatric Psychiatry and the 5th floor North West side of the Ottawa Hospital.

A private family service in memory and celebration of Hank will be held on Wednesday, November 2, 2022.  Condolences can be made online through the Capital Funeral Home and Cemetery.  No flowers please but donations in his honour can be made to the Queensway Carleton Hospital, The Ottawa Hospital, The Heart Institute, or Ottawa Food Bank.

As Hank would emphasize- the amount doesn’t matter- it is the participation on an ongoing basis that will help build our community to be a better place.

Myers Supports the Ontario Football Championships

In the snowy capital of Canada, Ottawa was happy to host this year’s Ontario Football Championships at TD Place Monday, November 26th through November 28th. Myers was happy to be one of the sponsors to make this happen for this group that braved the snow and cold.

Sixteen regional teams, composed of the top provincial secondary schools, took on the field over the three days to compete in the nine bowl series. The last game to be held on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at 2:00 pm EST. From start to finish, the young men that participated in the series were a lively group and toughed out the cold that mother nature threw upon them. No matter the outcome of each game, all the young men should be proud of the accomplishment and the effort made throughout the series.

The J.D. Power 2016 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study

J.D. Power Award

J.D. Power has released the results of it's 2016 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study and Chevrolet has a lot to celebrate.

The 2016 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from 33,560 original owners of 2013 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study examines any problems experienced during the past 12 months by the original owners. Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles, with a lower score reflecting higher quality. 177 specific problem symptoms grouped into eight major vehicle categories are covered by the study, which is now in its 27th year.

Of the 32 brands that were tracked, Chevrolet earned the 6th spot and 4 of 8 category wins.

  • The Chevrolet Malibu placed first in the Midsize Car category.
  • The Chevrolet Camaro placed first in the Midsize Sporty Car category.
  • The Chevrolet Equinox placed first in the Compact SUV category.
  • The Chevrolet Silverado HD placed first in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup category.

These results reinforce how truly committed Chevrolet is to building quality vehicles with the technology, performance, and design that customers want.

J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

J.D. Power recently put out its Initial Quality study showing the top recognized brands in the automotive industry this year. The survey that was conducted asked 84,000 people any problems they may have encountered during the first 90 days of owning or leasing their new vehicle. As one of the highest rated vehicles compared to industry standard, Hyundai ranked as 4th overall, behind only Porshe, Jaguar and Kia.

"This is a clear shift in the quality landscape," said Renee Stephens, vice president of U.S. automotive quality at J.D. Power. "For so long, Japanese brands have been viewed by many as the gold standard in vehicle quality. While the Japanese automakers continue to make improvements, we're seeing other brands -- most notably Korean makes -- accelerating the rate of improvement."

As far as individual models go, General Motors Chevrolet vehicles tie with three other manufacturers, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Nissan as high ranked in overall satisfaction according to the survey results. Top placing models rankings include:

  • Chevrolet Spark - Best City Car

Myers Orleans Bengals Win 2012 Inspiration Award!

The Orleans Bengals Football Club encourages youth to Be a Bengal, Not a Bully. Since 2008, Bengal players, coaches, parents, and managers have been united in their fight against bullying both on and off field.

The Be a Bengal, Not a Bully program began with a simple anti-bullying policy - developed and written by the young players themselves - and has since grown into a core component of the Bengal organization. The program identifies young leaders from within the team and provides them with mentorship training.

These mentors then lead other players through football drills and build the trust necessary to discuss dealing with bullies, controlling aggression and building positive relationships with peers, family members, teachers and coaches. This home-grown program benefits both the physical and mental health of all players, ageS six to 17 years.

The Bengals' commitment to healthy self-esteem, leadership, and emotional resilience is an inspiring approad to sport and life.

We are proud to announce that the Myers Automotive Group has donated $1,000,000 to the Queensway Carleton Hospital!

CTV Ottawa: Myers donation to Queensway Carleton

The Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation has announced the donation to the Acute Care of Elderly Unit, which will be named the Myers Automotive Acute Care of the Elderly Unit.

First of its kind in Eastern Ontario, the ACE Unit is expected to open in 2016 and contain 34 beds to better attend the needs of the growing elderly community in the greater Ottawa area. Currently, the population in Ottawa consists of about 14% of residents being over the age of 65. This is expected to increase by 3.5% per year over the next 20 years.

This new expansion in the Ottawa medical industry will give focused care to our senior community members, giving them the service they need for shorter hospital stays and the ability to stay local for more specialized treatments.
